“Masterful Clarinet ! Luca is a noted Italian clarinettist and composer based in London, having developed an enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso around the uk and overseas via recordings and concert hall appearances” (The Musician). Former clarinet professor in the uk and internationally recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to contemporary music, he debuts at the age of twelve at a prestigious hall of his home town Naples. Introduced as “the new voice of the clarinet” on the front page of De Klarinet magazine, Luciano graduated from the Conservatoire of Salerno (Italy), has been awarded the Fellow status at the Higher Education Academy (UK) and, according to the Clarinet & Saxophone Society of Great Britain, he has “established himself as the friendly face of contemporary clarinet”. Described by the Bbc Radio as “one of Europe’s leading exponent of jazz clarinet”, his repertoire also embraces Brahms, Stravinsky, Poulenc, Berio. He has held many master-classes, has regularly premiered his music at St Martin in the Fields London and Cambridge University, has performed at the South Bank Centre (recording live for Bbc Radio at the Royal Festival Hall), Edinburgh Festival, American Cathedral Paris. His solo albums have received much critical acclaim in three continents.
Part of a tour to promote Luca’s recent releases with the support of his label, this performance is informed by Luciano’s research on extended techniques and new music for solo clarinet and features compositions from Luciano’s last albums. The Sequenza has been inspired by the famous line of Gustav Mahler’s “A symphony must be like the world, it must embrace everything” and includes sections of music that is notated or “composed in real time” where a “sequence” of propositions are developed by the musician during the piece. Luciano tries in this remarkable journey to embrace all styles of music he loves in an imaginative tour around the world from Western European music to Afro-American or folkloric music of Southern of Italy, from contemporary classical music with chromatic and angular-shaped lines to heartfelt melodies. Along with classics by George Gershwin and Villa-Lobos, the programme also features a rarely performed composition by John Cage and original material recently premiered by Luca at Cambridge University and St Martin in the Fields in London.
