Despite the fact that Schubert and Rachmainoff never met in person, Rachmaninoff developed a deep love for the music of Schubert and performed it regularly with violinist Fritz Kreisler, with whom he played in a duo. Rachmaninoff composed the cycle "Six Moment Musicaux op.16" after being inspired by Schubert's "Six Moment Musicaux D.780 and although we won't present the Schubert cycle in this performance, we have included two rare gems from the violin/piano repertoire by Schubert which Rachmaninoff frequently performed with Kreisler as an hommage to this special friendship. The Sonatinas were published after Schubert's death and breathe an intimate atmosphere.
