A propos

In this talk, together with the artists of the performances “A Selection of Najmeh’s Dreams” and "Language: no broblem", Lore Baeten invites you to a conversation around their artistic approaches and questions of memory and language. Both performances are circling around Arabic and its multiple accents interweaving with further languages, as well as dying and surviving languages in the context of the displacements of the Palestinian people.

Lore Baeten is an Arabist, specialised in the Middle East. She obtained a master's degree in Oriental Languages and Cultures from Ghent University and studied at INALCO in Paris (FR), DEAC in Cairo (EG) and IFPO in Damascus (SY), where she lived and worked for 4 years. She teaches Arabic at KU Leuven and the College of Europe in Bruges.
Lore works as a literary translator and is both personally and professionally active in the cultural field. Her translations include theatre performances from across the Arab world, poetry and prose. Her latest translation is the novel "Where the wind dwells" by Syrian writer Samar Yazbek. She is a regular translator of Khashabi Ensemble, an independent Palestinian theatre company based in Haifa.
Furthermore, Lore chairs the Board of Directors of the Moussem Arts Centre, which aims to question the current artistic canon. Together with a group of friends, she was a driving force behind Lagrange Points, the first Arab secular bookstore and cultural meeting place in Brussels.
