BEVERLY GLENN-COPELAND (CAN)

De Canadese singer-songwriter BGC heeft echter lang op die erkenning moeten wachten. Zijn pakkend debuut Beverly Copeland dateert namelijk reeds uit 1970, opvolger Beverly Glenn-Copeland verscheen in 1971 en Keyboard Fantasies - zijn (ambient) pièce de résistance uit 1986 - viert volgend jaar zijn 40ste verjaardag. Het was pas in de 21ste eeuw dat zijn werk echt werd opgemerkt en (her)ontdekt. De Standaard: “Zo’n lange incubatie heeft één voordeel: het rijpingsproces, inclusief de transitie naar man, is diep geworteld.”

Toen Keyboard Fantasies in 2021 ‘reimagined’ werd, stonden artiesten als Bon Iver en Arca te springen om mee te werken. De originele heruitgave van dit album kreeg in 2020 dan weer de Polaris Heritage Prize, die wordt uitgereikt aan Classic Canadian Albums. Vorige winnaars: Neil Young, Arcade Fire en Feist. En recentelijk werkte hij zowel samen met Sam Smith als Devendra Banhart voor het album Transa dat was opgevat als ‘a celebration of the trans community’ waaraan verder ook ANOHNI, André 300, Bill Callahan en Adrianne Lenker meewerkten. En tot slot werd zijn jongste album The Ones Ahead (inter)nationaal fel bewierookt: “Gouden stem. Geweldig dat hij deze prachtplaat nog mocht maken.” (De Standaard) alsook: “Another mysterious milestone performed in an amplified emotional register.” (The Irish Times)

SPECIAL GUEST: ELIZABETH COPELAND (CAN)

Special guest is niemand minder dan Elizabeth Copeland: theatermaker, schrijver (zie: o.a.  JAZZ – Nature’s Improvisation), producent, kunsteducator en wederhelft (het koppel trouwde in 2009) van Glenn. Haar werk bevindt zich steeds op het snijvlak van kunst en activisme. Elizabeth co-producete Glenn’s meest recente tour en maakt(e) tevens deel uit van de backing band. Samen geloven ze in ‘the power of art to change lives’. Speciaal voor haar schreef Glenn Harbour (Song For Elizabeth):
